FALL/SPRING AFTER-SCHOOL PROGRAMS: POETRY, ART, NATURE

The Poetry Studio in Marlboro, VT (15 minutes from Brattleboro) offers after-school classes that combine poetry, art and nature. Young people, between the ages of 6-13, have the opportunity to write, draw and paint; to expand their appreciation and wonder of the natural world.

Located on twenty-five acres with access to a variety of natural landscapes, The Poetry Studio is the perfect place for the patient evocation of a harmonic balance between art and the natural world. Inspired by indigenous cultures, Ann Gengarelly, the Studio’s director, has created an environment where people of all ages gather to become a community of poets, artists and naturalists. As Ann has observed: Again and again, I see people of all ages work toward a deeper understanding of their own nature through encounters with the natural world. Writing a poem while closely observing a flower invites students to see the blossoms of a day lily more vividly; perhaps to discover new connections between the plant world and some hidden thought or feeling. According to Ann, everyone has poetry inside them and the need to be heard. It is this act of witnessing the self and others that develops compassion and caring towards nature and one’s fellow beings.

Poetry classes will be taught by Ann Gengarelly who has been a poet-in-residence in southeastern Vermont for over twenty-five years.

Themes will be offered, but students will also be encouraged to discover whatever material inspires them to write, draw, paint or make a collage while exploring the woods, pond or surrounding gardens.

Classes are kept small in order to provide an intimate and individualized experience. For the past ten years, Trey Wentworth, a writer and gifted teacher has collaborated with Ann, allowing for a 1 to 4 teacher-student ratio. For younger students who are not yet comfortable writing, Ann or the assistant teacher acts as a scribe for their poetry words.

Students will be accepted on a “first-come-first-serve basis.” If interested, email Ann at gengarellya@gmail.com

Classes will stress the opportunity to travel inward and make connections between the student’s inner landscapes and the world outside.
